Last night we had a fantastic tasting of three wines from Italy for the latest round of our Virtual Wine Tasting series.
With 16 screens on the call, and alongside some fantastic canapes, we started by visiting Sicily and tasting Tasca D’Almerita Bianco Regaleali 2017. Beautiful, fresh, notes of apple and tropical fruits, a real crowd pleaser and one that our tasters gave an average of 8.33 out of 10.
We then head to the opposite end of Italy, as we arrived in the rockstar wine region of Piedmont – where this week we were trying two of their wines. Firstly the Paolo Scavino – Dolcetto D’Alba 2017 – that had fabulous notes of cherry, spice and blueberry. In a separate glass, we had the Paolo Scavino – Barbera D’Alba 2017 to enable us to compare and contrast the two wines. The Barbera, slightly bigger in style, with an elegant and mature fruited nose. Fantastic structure, fine tannins, this was a very enjoyable wine indeed.
Our tasters struggled to decide which wine they preferred, and there was often a 0.25 difference between the two when it came to marking. In the end, the Dolcetto finished with an average score of 7.98 and the Barbera 8.20.
Congratulations to Tom and Sophie for making it onto the Canapé of the Week Honours board with their classic and colourful Italian antipasti offering of tomato, mozzarella, fresh basil and salami.
A great way to end our latest case of tastings – and we look forward to next tasting in 2 weeks time.
