Waud Wines hosted a corporate wine tasting for our client Metzger at Gordon Ramsay’s Union Street Cafe on the 1st of February. Surprisingly, there were a few guests that had taken on Dry January, so were gasping to get back on the vino.

After a sparkling reception of magnums of Mas de Daumas Gassac Rose Frizzant – we moved on to an Old World versus New World tasting for the 60 clients that were in attendance.

First up was Les Pierres Girard from Domaine de La Bergerie in Loire, an old world Chenin Blanc. This was compared against our next wine, again white that was majority Chenin Blanc from South Africa. This was one of the favourite’s of the night; Vondeling Babiana.

Then on to the reds, we first visited the famous Allegrini family and had their Corte Giara Valpolicella Ripasso 2013, a blend of Corvina and Merlot from Veneto. To compare, we popped over to Chile for Matetic Vineyards Syrah. A super and powerful wine from the San Antonio Valley.

Our last pairing was one of our cult favourites – Clos Pons Alges in magnum format. A blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Syrah.

The last wine of the night was from Lebanon, the iconic Chateau Musar vineyard. Hochar 2011 is their second wine and has a deep garnet colour with a nose of blackberries and damsons, bitter cherries with hints of Assam tea leaves and cloves. On the palate, there are cranberries, Christmas cake spices, coffee beans and tobacco. A very nice way to end the evening.

Congraulations to Robin and Kim for having the most comprehensive notes and won a magnum of Mas de Daumas Gassac Rose.
